Steve was addressing a class for Special Ed Teachers at Azusa Pacific University. As a guest speaker, and his opening line was...
"Hi, my name is Steve Vaughn and people say that I am Mentally Retarded, but I am Down syndrome!"

Steven Vaughn lost his life to Alzheimer's Disease in 2008, he was 49. He was very proud of the fact that he was part of the Hi Hopes, Creative Identity, and Hope University. He traveled the country with the New Horizons (OC YMCA) and he worked for Carl's Jr. for 16 years. On his 15th anniversary, he won a cruise trip to Cancun. He could bowl 189 on one Saturday with the Hope Bowlers and the next he could bowl 42 and be proud of both. He won a Silver Medal in the backstroke at the UCLA Special Olympics and numerous awards for his bowling. Steve enjoyed Square Dancing with the Hope Twirlers and singing with his friends.  Our family owes many thanks to Mrs. Walker, Hope and Mr. George Gilliam and Creative Identity for their guidance and love.
