TWENTYWONDER is a fun-filled fundraising event/party that will benefit the DSALA and the community born with Trisomy 21 living in the Greater Los Angeles Area.
TWENTYWONDER will have classic stage-driven entertainment in the form of musicians, comedians, a comedic video area, dancing and a collection of items that are interesting and educational.
TWENTYWONDER is designed to attract people who are interested in the creativity, shapes, and/or values of contemporary pop culture.
Our demographic audience is a professional who works within the creative fields of Los Angeles and San Francisco and has a voice in our society.
The singular pursuit of TWENTYWONDER has been to increase the circle of compassion surrounding the DSALA and its mission.
By creating a one night event for hundreds of individuals from the Film/TV/Art communities, who are not presently participating with the DSALA, we feel this event will give them a closer view into our community.

"LoveAble Friendship Circle"
For adults with Down syndrome 18 years and older
LoveAble is held its first "Friendship Circle;" an opportunity to get to know other adults with Down syndrome, age 18 and older, looking for new friends and relationships.
The “Friendship Circle” was a modified version of speed dating. Participants were seated at tables and had 5-10 minutes each to converse with their fellow table mate, and after their time was up, they switched. There were volunteers present to coach those who may be a little timid and hesitant.
The relaxed atmosphere gave everyone a chance to find a possible new friend, or even a new love interest. It was an afternoon full of connections and conversations.

The Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles sponsored a "Moms Need Moms" Cruise. It was a 3-night cruise aboard the Carnival Paradise to Ensenada, Mexico. We left on January 29 and returned on February 1, 2010. This was a chance to network with other women who "get it," as well as a chance to relax and get a break from the responsibilities of every day life. We got together the first evening for introductions. There were plenty of activities available to keep busy, or just spend time at the spa or sitting on the deck doing nothing at all.
If you are interested in participating again, please let us know.

The DSALA has just received word from MTV that they would like to invite us to attend a Los Angeles screening of their new series "How's Your News?" which will begin airing on Sunday, February 8th on MTV.
"How's Your News?" has been in production for over 10 years featuring reporters with various disabilities. It touched my heart and my funny bone the first time I saw it. I guarantee you will be a fan. Please consider joining the DSALA at the free screening.

The episode I saw did include mature subject matter; reporters were interviewing the public about legalization of marijuana. One of the subjects of an interview said that she was in porn. The interviews with Jimmy Kimble and Sarah Silverman are also mature. It was all language related, nothing visual. I would suggest the show is for mature audiences.
There are an amazing amount of laughs. The reporter Bobby, with DS, who is very difficult to understand, steals every scene he is in. You can check out some of their work at their website www.howsyournews.com.
I hope you will pass this information on to anyone you think might enjoy the event. They do not have to be a DSALA member to attend. Respond soon, there is a limit to the seats in the theatre. There is some wheelchair seating available, if it is needed be sure to request it.

DSALA Parent to Parent Peer Mentor Training
Saturday and Sunday, January 24 & 25, 2009
9 AM to 4 PM each day
Perhaps the best support a new parent can receive is from someone who has been there. The DSALA knows most new parents want to talk with other parents when their child receives a diagnosis of Down syndrome. We find our families to be very responsive to one another and enjoy “Connecting” with each other. In order to support our parents as they reach out to one another the DSALA is presenting a two day workshop; “Parent to Parent Peer Mentor Training.” This training will give parents the necessary tools needed to be effective peer counselors. This training also presents the basics on DS that any parent who wants to speak on Down syndrome issues or represent the DSALA should have.
The workshop will cover up to date information on:
• Genetic information and current tests
• Medical affects of the syndrome
• Speech therapy methods and support
• Systems including; Regional Center, Area Board 10, Protection and Advocacy and the State DDS Office
• Early intervention support
• Why peer counseling works
• Sharing personal experiences
• What is the grieving process
• Listening skills and role play
• History and future of the DSALA
Who will benefit:
• Any parent who want to support new parents
• Any parent who wants to become a spokesperson on DS issues or represent the DSALA speaking at hospitals, schools, and other community recourses.
